Organic Farming 101

Organic and natural farming is gaining genuine roots these days (no pun intended). Dismissed as a gimmick right up until a short while ago, these days environmentalists and commercial farmers alike are discovering the importance of going organic, at least where farming is involved. So to speak, agriculture is responsible for a massive growth of synthetic chemicals into the ecosystem and the atmosphere we breathe in. The environmental footprint left behind from the majority of farming practices on a global level seems quite grim. It’s no wonder-and not too early-that the earth has woken up en masse and is actually thinking about the aftereffects of these widespread chemical utilization and tightening their reins now.
In short, most global economies have decided to veer towards using more organic ways of farming. Though this is not done simply by batting an eyelid-the entire change will require a complete renaissance regarding strategies and methodologies, the human and mechanical methods used and a humongous expense-a couple of practices being put into place. Many nations who’ve agreed to attest to organic farming seem to be incorporating these fresh ideals and carefully phasing out conventional, synthetic-laden methods of agriculture.
So, exactly what organic practices are being used? For one, the chemical fertilizers are being entirely done away with. In place of using synthetic products, the fundamental NPK (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) ratio is being maintained by much more nature-friendly methods such as crop rotation. Plant seeds that are used are completely naturally obtained-they are not treated with any kind of insecticides or fungicides to ensure they are more productive. They are also not treated with hormones or genetically modified so as to produce “more desirable” types of plants. Organic farming states the plant life has to be preserved as close to their pure self as possible, with no tampering with them in any way.
Organic and natural farming believes in safeguarding the entire ecology of the field and not simply the crop, which is being grown. In place of using harmful pesticides, pests are diverted from the grounds by using more humane and environmentally friendly ways such as using barriers. A natural balance is retained among the wildlife that encourage the growth of the harvest and those that can generate some obvious kind of harm. The same applies to weed removal procedures. Organic farming abhors use of chemical substance weedicides. Physical removal techniques are usually encouraged and greater cultivation techniques are employed so that unwanted weeds never appear.
One reason why organic farming has virtually blossomed in many areas throughout the world today is that it conserves the earth and is a huge contributor to the Go Green Movement that’s hooked everyone at the moment. Organic farming manages the water and the soil by not pumping harmful chemicals into them. It takes care of the air as well because it prevents using any substances that might release toxic substances into the atmosphere. Thus, in several ways, it is actually great for our planet, and not just the field.
Considering all these good reasons, it isn’t difficult to work out why organic farming has gained priority above traditional farming methods presently. Despite the fact that organic crops are more expensive than traditional crops presently, individuals are discovering the enormous benefits they bring and do not mind having to pay more for this way that mother nature ordained us to reside with.

Anthracnose is a fungal disease that attacks a wide variety of grasses, trees and plants. When Anthracnose Disease infects trees it can kill buds, which stimulates the development of many short twigs that may destroy the shape of trees. Plants often exhibit lesions with pink masses during wet, warm weather and can develop rot if the disease is not properly controlled. Grass is particularly vulnerable when weakened during high heat and stress in spring and summer.

What is Organic Farming and is it Important

Organic farming is a broad concept with extreme application. It is well appreciated on a large scale by the people as now with the help of it they can easily grow their own food. If you have a little bit of free time with you then you need not to face any kind of problem. You can prepare and serve good quality delicious food by doing organic farming at your home.
It is not true that organic farming is practiced at a small scale only. By having a trip of farming sector you can easily understand how much vast this sector actually is. This is not the case some time before. Few years back it was not a highly thriving and demanding sector but now the case has totally changed. It is now not limited to a small scale industry as day by day more corporate sectors are taking interest in this field. Large corporate farming is taking keen interest in the concept of organic farming. Continuous research is going on to find out the way by which huge fields of a single crop can be grown. No one can deny the fact that in the process of organic farming, pests are believed to be the major threat. Due to harmful impact on the biodiversity unnatural pesticides are not much preferred to use.
If you are going for the natural pesticides for controlling the pests then it is certainly an eco friendly approach but believed to be much expensive in contrast to unnatural ones. Some time before, due to expensive nature they were not much preferred in the process of organic farming. After the entrance of large scale industries with huge budget this can be achieved now very easily. Natural pesticides can be a good option when it is about the large scale organic farming but if you are going for it at your home or at a small scale in a separate piece of land then it is advisable to look for any other good option. This is because like other kinds of farming organic farming also requires the process of sowing, cultivating and harvesting. If you do not have proper arrangement of water for the purpose of irrigation then you require depending largely on the rain water. If you are concluding the process of organic farming at your home then irrigation is not a big issue but even at a small scale proper arrangement of water is very essential. If you do not have a huge budget with you then it can be a difficult work for you. You require investing a good amount on purchase of seeds, irrigation, fertilizers, harvesting, etc.
There is much debate till now on the use of unnatural pesticides in the process of organic farming. Several environmentalists and consumer protection organization have claimed that the use of unnatural pesticides not only damage the environment but also have an adverse impact on the quality of food. For killing the insects and pests these pesticides are used but they are not considered helpful after sometime. It is so because these insects as well as the pests easily get adapted to the effects of the chemicals involved in them and so these pesticides looses their worth. Sooner or later it damages the health of the final consumer who without knowing consumes a large amount of lethal chemicals and synthesized materials along with the natural food. Thus it is injurious for the health of the human being as well.
Thus there are several ways by which you can have your favorite vegetables as well as fruits and that too with the help of inorganic as well as organic farming. As there are several pros as well as cons of both it is up to you to decide the one that is best for you. You can make use of organic farming to turn your dreams into reality and the best part is it is already benefiting millions of people so you are not at all required to worry for it as well.

The value of hard currency makes it possible for exporters to source it at all cost, thus making the few available in the market to be quite expensive for an average family to afford.

Safety on the Farm

Farm accidents occur often enough and shockingly a large percentage of them involve tractors. Gone are the days when a farmer would physically push a plowshare or goad a pair of oxen to do so. However, mechanization on the farm has brought in its train its own problems. One solution to tractor safety would be to use agricultural rubber tracks Of these Motiondynamics rubber tracks recommend themselves for use automatically.
They feature continuous wrap, corrosion resistant, jointless stainless steel cables for STRENGTH and LONG LIFE – there is no joint in these tracks. Therefore, there is no weakness. You get a strong and flexible track that will not tear, rip or bust easily. Only the finest premium-grade virgin rubber is used and mixed with synthetic rubber compound blends for maximum protection against cracking, chunking, and abrasions.
A tractor can roll over when being driven over uneven terrain, ditches or deep crevices in the land. Particularly when driving up a steep incline, you need to be wary that the tractor does not tilt over. This makes the usage of farming rubber tracks more desirable. A scientifically engineered dedicated track design to match your machine specifically ensures true sprocket alignment, fewer undercarriage replacements, and an OEM quality fit! It would also add to the stability of the tractor and keep it from skidding. Good rubber tracks help the wheels grip the land better.
Tractors are perhaps one of the most crucial equipment on the farm. There is no need to convert them into one of the riskiest. Use them for the work they were intended not to take the children into town or as a tow cart. Even so, while running the tractor over agrarian land, using agricultural rubber tracks ensures that the surface of the farmland is protected from significant wear and tear. Just as it is necessary to use proper eye and ear protection while driving a tractor, it is vital to follow the traffic rules also even if no one seems to be in sight. Protect yourself and protect your land and equipment.

Earthworms’ Roles in Biodynamic Farming
Posted: Jan 03, 2010 |
]]>
Biodynamic farming emphasizes interrelationship among soil, plants, and animals. Natural inhabitants of soil could be of great use to farming. This is what earthworms are all about. Usually, people are scared and disgusted to see earthworms. It is time everyone realizes how such crawling creatures can help bring about higher productivity and fertility of the soil.
Earthworms are not just useful especially to agriculture. If you would know the creatures better, you will note that they are more interesting than they initially seem. There are more fascinating facts and trivial information about these crawling organisms. Here are some of those interesting facts:
• The average life span of earthworms, depending on species, is about four to eight years. That is on the assumption that environmental or surrounding conditions of the creatures are conducive and ideal for their survival. If the environment gets less conducive, of course, earthworms could perish. Worms are not able to survive freezing temperatures as well as too much sunlight. That is why they are thriving in the dark through the burrows they create on the soil. Some earthworms are even referred to as night crawlers because they tend to go out at night when three is no sunlight.
• There are more than 3,000 different species of earthworms. Anecic worms burrow through the soil and surface to the soil at night to get some food and drag it down to their permanent homes beneath the topsoil. Endogeic worms have shallower burrows and are feeding on organic matters already abundant in the soil. Epigeic worms are those feeding on litter and decaying organic matters. They do not own permanent burrows but they keep on doing such diggings. Epigeic worms are the types used for artificial cultivation of vermiculture.
• Worms, especially the vermiculture types, also have needs to survive further and reproduce better. Among the basic necessities of worms are adequate food, aeration, a 70% to 90% moisture content and ideal temperatures of about 15°C to 30°C.
• Vermiculture is the process or technology of raising, reproducing and maintaining earthworms artificially. Vermiculture is also a scientific and organized process because materials used are specific and processes are strict. Vermiculture pits should are always protected from direct light from the sun and are always kept moist. Protection from predators like rats, birds and ants are also ascertained.
• You can actually artificially raise earthworms. It just can be a tedious process. If you need worms for your crops, plantations or orchards, you can always easily secure and buy some by the kilos at vermiculture centers and businesses in your community.
Earthworms are important to biodynamic farming. Farmers should acknowledge this fact. The next time you see one in your garden, do not put it off or kill it. Be thankful for its presence. Naturally, earthworms are nature’s gift to the soil, where plants grow. Get rid of pests, but not of earthworms. You should also look at other biodynamic farming techniques that are available.

Chemically Removing Tree Stumps
Tree stumps are an ugly site to look at. They are useless and sometimes needlessly in the way, taking up land space where something else can be planted. Stumps can also prove harmful if in the garden or backyard as they may become breeding grounds for fungus and several other wood eating insects that later might get into the house and start eating away the wood inside.

Dog Breeders and Puppy Farms: Money Over Morals

The breeding and selling of puppies is big business, both in the UK and abroad. But if you are thinking of spending hundreds of pounds on a pedigree puppy then please think again! Details from the latest Dogs Trust survey show that a staggering 107,228 stray and abandoned dogs were picked up from UK streets in 2009. Despite huge efforts from animal welfare organisations, charities and local councils, on average 12 stray and abandoned dogs an hour are now handled by local dog pounds.
According to the report, each hour:
> 5 dogs are reunited with their owners
> 3 are taken to welfare organisations
> 1 is rehomed from the Local Authority kennels
> 2 are in kennels for their seven day holding period
> 1 dog is put to sleep
So of the 107,228 dogs picked up in the last year, around 9,000 remained unclaimed and were put to sleep for want of a home.
Despite these rather sobering figures, dogs continue to be overbred and farmed because the demand exists. Huge profits are involved and dogs will suffer and die until consumers make a stand. Puppy farms are places of horrible cruelty to mother, father and pupps. Though you may not think your puppy originated in a farm, if you bought him from an advert in the newspaper, the internet, a pet shop or superstore, these outlets are all to often supplied by puppy farms. And even if he came from a recognised breeder or maybe even a family friend, you have to ask yourself how responsible it is breeding dogs considering the figures above. Money too often comes before morals!
Dog rescue centres nationwide are overflowing with friendly and affectionate dogs hoping for a second chance. It is a myth that rescue dogs are aggressive and not suitable for family life. Rescue dogs arrive in shelters for all sorts of reasons and many have excellent temperaments. They come in all breeds, shapes, ages and sizes. They will have been assessed by their rescue centre who will have a good idea about their personality and ideal home.
Far too many dogs are bred for a quick profit and sold without any consideration for their future welfare. With so many wonderful dogs facing death in pounds, please consider dog adoption when searching for your new four legged friend.

Fat Farm – All The Myths About It

The term “fat farm”, as also with the term “fat camp”, carries with it a decidedly pejorative tone, but does that mean the concept behind them is bad? Indisputably not, as it turns out. As long as the participant is attending of their own free will, the idea behind these weight loss resorts and camps is wonderful, and well worth considering for anyone having difficulty shedding those unwanted pounds.
Most Recommended Tips for Fat Farm – All The Myths About It
http://www.braceletbreastcancer.com/category/bracelet-breast-cancer/
The difference between a weight loss camp (or fat camp) and a weight loss resort (or fat farm) is simple: the former is for children and teens, the latter for adults. Both provide accommodations, fresh and delicious supervised meals, trained health and fitness professionals on staff (usually including a health clinic or at least a nurse on premises), and lots of supervised exercise.
/ Most weight loss camps for kids and teens include nutrition classes, supervised aerobic activities, and regular weigh-ins, and report an average weekly weight loss ranging from 2 to 6 pounds. Camp Shane one such weight loss camp, one of the more popular ones, and it emphasizes developing improved physical skills that campers can carry back home into their regular lives. Another such camp, Camp Empire Lake, eschews the whole idea of weigh-ins altogether, equating them with the defeatist attitudes like guilt and shame that get in the way of being happy in whatever body campers currently live in.
Most Recommended Tips forFat Farm – All The Myths About It
http://www.dietbuzzer.com/blog/category/protein-diets
Weight loss resorts for adults add to this mix of elements more advanced and esoteric methods of weight loss, like yoga, acupuncture, and meditation. Many also employ medical professionals, nutritionists, life coaches, and physical therapists available for participants to consult. Some resorts even hold hands-on workshops in the kitchen, teaching attendees how to cook more healthy and balanced meals for themselves.
What all these short-term homes-away-from-home for young and old alike really provide, however, far more than a little structure and supervision to a person’s day, is the supportive and encouraging environment of a group of people all dedicated to the same goal of losing weight. In a world where overweight people are besieged by outside judgment, these weight loss resorts and camps provide an atmosphere free of judgment, where a person is valued for who they are and encouraged to be all the desire to be.
Taking a break from everyday society to be surrounded by other people with weight issues of their own is one of the safest ways imaginable to face your own weight issues head on.

Mother Country talks about growing up during the Great Depression. She was born in the late 20′s and remembers life on the farm with nine other brothers and sisters during the 1930′s and 40′s. Back then it was a way of life but can you imagine all of us spoiled folks trying to survive a second great depression today? We probably don’t have a clue how good we really have it today.

How To Raise Pigs Using Organic Farming – Know The Advantages Before You Start Raising Pigs

Consumers are becoming aware of the health benefits of organic vegetables and organic meat. Now you can go to the market and select between commercial and organic products. But why buy if you can produce? Due to the growing popularity of organic farming, farm owners and hog raisers are switching to organic pig farming and organic feeds. Cooperatives are constantly giving seminars and programs on how to raise pigs using organic methods.
One of the traditional ways on how to raise pigs is as simple as letting them graze in pastures and open range farms. In here, pigs are allowed to grazed grass, plants, and even herbs as its food. The idea is to utilize the natural ventilation and the sun to provide better environment for the pigs. These also serve as an exercise for the pigs to keep them healthy and leaner.
The open range farms also make sure that clean and beneficial plants are scattered around the pasture. Plants like lemongrass and guava leaves are good for the pigs digestive system while turmeric produce tender and juicy meat. Pigs are also introduce to organic diets which include organic corn, flax seed, buckwheat, barley, roasted soybeans, and vitamins and minerals designed for organic production. Corn shots are also given several days before butchering to integrate a sweeter taste to the meat.
Organic farming eliminates the consumption of antibiotics, hormones, and animal products, which can cause certain diseases both to the pigs and the consumers.
De-worming of pigs can also be natural. Garlic is a good alternative for antibiotics and commercial dewormers. Mince the garlic and mix directly to the feeds. Ongoing treatment is recommended to eliminate the worms and prevent them from coming back.
Wondering how to raise pigs at home? If you do not have a grazing land but live near an organic farm then your problem is solved. Purchasing directly from organic farms and farmer’s market assures you of fresh produce. Sometimes organic farms also allow fellow farmers to use their land, as the pigs’ manure can be instant compost for their plants. You can also purchase fruits in the market as a treat for the pigs.
One of the drawbacks of organic farming is the cost. Organic feeds cost more than conventional feeds. If you stay within the pasture area, it may cost a little lower but this will not ensure a proper diet for the pigs. The high cost of organic pig farming will also affect the selling price when it gets in the market. Diseases that require antibiotics may be substituted by natural remedies but sometimes cannot be prevented to cure the sick pigs.
Organic farming is a natural way on how to raise pigs. Pigs produce from organic farms are leaner and healthier. You are assured that it is fresh and is not touched by toxic antibiotics or genetically modified food. Although it may cost more to produce, the benefits and assurance that you get from organic farming cannot be upended by non-organic and commercially produced products.

If you are interested in entomology(the study of insects) then a visit to one of Stratford’s premier tourist attractions is a must.
The Farm is located just five minutes walk from the town centre opposite the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and is signposted all the way to the entrance.
Once inside the farm there are a whole host of butterflies and insects to see and explore with different sections dedicated to individual insects. You will marvel at the hundreds of exotic butterflies flying around from all over the world and feeding in a spectacular tropical environment.
The area is known as the Flight Area and is a landscaped tropical greenhouse (largest in the UK!) together with waterfalls and fish filled pools and houses some 250 different species of butterfly from 20 different countries.
Or you may want to visit the “Insect City” as it is known where you will find beetles stick insects and leaf cutting ants to name just a few of the creepy crawlies on show all respectively safely housed behind glass.
For those who are a bit braver then a visit to the “Arachnoland” will be worth the wait as you will be able to see the worlds largest spider plus a scorpion colony and a total of 15 different other spiders from Tarantulas to the tiny Black Widow.
The largest spider on show here is the Goliath Bird Eating Tarantula with leg span of 25cm!
Finally a visit to the “Caterpilar room” must be taken it is here you can view the life cycle of a butterfly from its cocoon stage through to transformation into a butterfly. In fact at the Emerging cage as it is known you can actually see butterflies emerging from there Chrysalis or pupae stage into full butterflies for the first time.
To add to this there is also a British Butterfly Garden you can visit at the moment this garden is under a new landscaping project but once completed the garden will contain the top listed 10 butterfly nectar plants that should attract butterflies to the area. After all this there is also a gift shop with hundreds of gifts available to buy all in all a visit to the Stratford upon AvonButterfly Farm is a fascinating and worthwhile experience whether you are a insect lover or not.

The black truffle harvesting season officially ends in Spain the 15th of March (beware the ides of March), many black truffle farmers stop collecting black truffles around mid February. They leave the last black truffles to ripen and rot underground. The black truffle spore will then impregnate the area with new black truffle spores. In the following years there will be more black truffles in that general area.
Old timers who used to collect black truffles in the wild used to carry a small sack of compost mixed with minced black truffles. When they removed a black truffle from the ground, they would add a small amount of this mixture to the hole in the ground where the black truffle was and then cover it back up. They claimed that in the following years in the surrounding area there would be more black truffles.
Some farmers dont start looking for black truffles on their farms until the 5th or 6th year after planting their trees. Even thou there might have been black truffles to be collected, if you leave the 1st truffles to rot underground, your black truffle farm will most likely produce more black truffles the following years.
Heres an idea to deter wild boar from trying to get into your black truffle farm. I havent tried it yet but I thought to spray the bottom of the fence with some long lasting, horrible smelling substance (non toxic of course). They sell nowadays imitation predator urine which I will be planning to use in the near future. All animals have a genetic panic button that says run when they come into contact with a carnivore or its scent. Wild boar are tenacious head strong critters. When they smell the black truffles, they will go to any lengths to get them. I continuously find new wild boar tracks around the outside of my fence, where they circle my land looking for a way to get in. What interests them is the smell of the black truffle spore inoculation on the truffle tree roots. That is how sensitive the wild boars scent of smell is.
One thing that I have failed to mention so far is how the truffle spore propagates or gets dispersed over large areas. Seeds from plants, trees, weeds and such are air borne dispersed, the truffle spore has no such advantage. Mushrooms will also disperse their spores wind ward bound. The only way a truffle spore can disperse itself is by being eaten by some rodent / critter and once passed thru its digestive track, be defecated some distance from where it was originally eaten. The black truffle spore is resistant enough to pass thru digestive tracks without suffering harm. If luck is on the truffle spores side, it will be defecated in an ideal spot where it can take hold and restart its life cycle. Unfortunately, this is the exception rather than the rule.
